# Choice

When the sun moves into Cancer,  
I feel your pull on the tide of me,  
on the memory of who you were to me   
especially in these times.

Salt in blood and salt in tears and salt   
in a circle around us   
could not change the danger   
we always knew was coming-   
we knew we were never truly free.

Even though we were supposed   
to know nothing,   
we knew so many things about   
how we were different   
and could not live as the same. We knew we were   
daughters and sisters and friends and lovers, but  
not mothers, not now, maybe not ever.   
We all held each other when   
things happened and in blood and tears with salt   
we heard each other say   
This is the time I claim that have more to offer   
than the mute acceptance   
of whatever happens to me.

This is the time I choose myself.

Ramona Szczerba is a practicing psychologist, witch and artist based in San Diego. 

"I work in relational narrative psychotherapy, mixed media, collage and watercolor. My visual art trends towards contemplations on themes of dwelling spaces, environment, magic, feminism and the natural world. My focus is on how these realms intersect and some of the forces that create them. Most recently this process includes depictions of archetypical women in unexpected settings and in their roles as world-builders. Long term I hope to continue to delve into explorations of the liminal space between magic and depth psychology in service of re-enchanting the world."
