We launched our Fall season — true stories of magical people who were missing from our witchcraft — with a Mabon special on word witchcraft and a luminous episode honouring Rachel Pollack. This season is a refusal: to let the future be an afterthought, to let story and voice be privatized, quieted, or erased. It is a call to scramble the old maps and make new ones with song, ink, and spell.

Mabon special: Word Witches
Rachel Pollack: The Future is as Real as the Present
We are short on time and long on demand: the world needs clearer spells, sharper questions, and voices that will not be sanitized. As Harmony Birch writes in her zine piece Spells for Owning Your Voice: “They tried to sanitize your wild.” Pick up those scraps of wild and stitch them into a speech that is free.
Rachel Pollack reminds us to work with a different physics of possibility: “At any moment the future is as real as the present.” Ask braver, more haunted questions — What if the future is already pushing back at us? — and listen for the answers in the soil, the margins, the tarot spreads, the small acts you can perform today.
Words are tools: “A pencil is a wand and a weapon,” a phrase we returned to in our Mabon conversation. Write the future you will live into, not the future you’ve been taught to accept. Insist upon our collective flourishing.
🌑 This week’s prescription:
- Clear a small altar. Sweep a patch of floor or a tabletop; open a window. Let the air move through the room. (Physical clearing is magical clearing.)
- Ask a deeper question. Take a card, a pen, or a breath and ask: “What can I imagine otherwise?” — write the first line that arrives. Then ask: What is the question behind the question? and pull a card. From these two messages, play word witch. Craft a line of power directly to you now, from your future self.
- Own your voice. Read aloud these words from Harmony Birch’s piece:
I move with the light of life,
Of Mother Earth's sweet love
and assurance of blooming.
Say it to your body. (Missing Witches)
- Cast the future. Take your spell from the future and:
- Burn it (safely) and bury the ash with a seed, or
- Fold it 5 times and place it underneath a stone at your front doorstep, or
- Tape it to your mirror on Sunday and speak it every morning for 7 mornings.
- Move with music. Put on Green-House : Six Songs for Invisible Gardens and dance like you’re summoning a living, gentle future. Ride the waves.
- Send it outward. Post the line you wrote somewhere into the digital thicket, or leave it as an offering at a crossroads or garden path. If you trust us, submit your true story to the webzine — the call for submissions is open and we will publish readers’ magic. Missing Witches
The medicine of the hour is urgent AND tender: own your voice, cast a small future today, and do not apologize for calling in what joyful justice looks like. The future is not an object we wait for — it is alive, and dancing.
